He is also a big proponent of men like M.B. Pennington who wrote Centering Prayer as well as Bede Griffiths both of whom were Catholic monks as well as students and propagators of eastern mysticism, monasticism, contemplative prayer, TM and other prayer practises. It is not surprising then that in his book 'The Signature of Jesus' Manning wrote a chapter on contemplative prayer.
He is known for his message of grace. In fact he has redefined the term grace and rarely even quotes scripture. This is one of the men who is moulding the view, conception and doctrine in todays Evangelical church concerning grace, salvation and forgiveness. No wonder then that he attacks those who hold fast to the authority of Scripture or who preach holiness. Yet his books are probably in your local bookshop.
Men like Philip Yancey and Frank Viola have been greatly influenced by him. When Yancey's book 'What's So Amazing About Grace' came out in 1998 a number of Pastors in Scotland from very different backgrounds were boasting on it to me. Someone gave me a copy and I read it. I was shocked. His message of grace allowed him to attend a convention with a practising homesexual. This is now love and grace. It is a rejection of the Scriptures, a toleration of sin, a confused counterfeit love, and an utter misunderstanding of God. These are the authors who mould the minds of evangelicals by their writings in this hour. I guess the Reformation was a big mistake.
