John Brown - Martyr & Covenanter

In 1685 John Brown, a Scottish Covenanter, was shot down dead in front of his wife and children outside his house. Although not a preacher he had helped the travelling, persecuted preachers at every oppurtunity. His home was the regular gathering place for a genuine band of believers who met in secret to feed on Christ and His Word as well as to pray, encourage one another and to worship God in spirit and in truth free from the apostacy which had flooded into the churches.

Claverhouse, the Judas of the covenant and the one who ordered the soldiers to shoot him, turned to Brown's wife and asked mockingly, "What do you think of your fine husband now?" With tears rolling down her cheeks she answered, "I think more of him now than I ever did of him in life."

The Lord's covenanted truth of Blood redemption raised up such saints who loved not their lives unto death. This is a far cry from those who blush at God's truth, compromise His commands and vacillate over obedience and who yield under the fear of man. Only a true gospel makes true saints.
